Yeomen Rally for First Win of the Season

Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's soccer team notched its first win of the season, knocking off the visiting Grove City College Wolverines 3-2 on Wednesday evening at Fred Shults Field.

It was a pretty level match throughout the 90-minute fixture with Oberlin out-shooting Grove City 21-20, however, the Wolverines put 12 of their attempts on frame compared to just six for the Yeomen.

The strong play of Colvin Iorio kept the Yeomen in it as he turned away a career-high 10 shots.

The visitors drew first blood, getting on the board less than five minutes into the contest as Sam Belitz found the back of the net on a penalty kick.

It remained a 1-0 advantage for the guests at the intermission but it didn't take long after the restart for Oberlin to find the equalizer as sophomore Xander Francoeur netted his first goal of the year and second of his career in the 48th minute.

Less than three minutes later, the Yeomen would go out in front with a pass from Antony Commissaris to Toby Wells-Zimmerman to open up his 2022 account with a goal, running his career ledger to four.

Oberlin settled down in the back and kept the Wolverines at bay until the 81st minute as Belitz deposited his second score of the night and third of the season to even the count at 2-2.

However, the score wasn't even for long as 2021 All-NCAC selection Anthony Pacewicz sent in the game-winner just 80 ticks later and the Yeomen rearguard held strong for the final nine minutes to preserve the win.

Oberlin, which had a 9-4 edge in corners, continues its busy four-game homestand on Saturday with a 2 p.m. matinee against Chatham University.
