Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's soccer team scored early and often en route to earning a 6-2 victory over the visiting Allegheny College Gators on Wednesday night at Fred Shults Field.
The scoring output for the Yeomen was their largest since September 7, 2019 when they beat D'Youville College by same 6-2 count.
Oberlin wasted no time jumping all over Allegheny from the onset as
Nasim Amer opened the scoring 101 seconds into the contest, finishing off a pass from
Toby Wells-Zimmerman. Less than five minutes later, Wells-Zimmerman wanted in on the act as he cashed in his fourth goal of the year to give the Yeomen an early 2-0 cushion.
The barrage continued throughout the opening stanza as Amir struck again in the ninth minute- depositing a cross from first-year
Nathan Thompson. A mere 10 minutes later, senior
Jon Schafer buried a feed from Wells-Zimmerman to make it 4-0.
The Gators would get on the board in the 20
th minute but the Yeomen weren't done scoring in the first half as senior
Alec Gembala netted his first-career goal in the 38
th minute to make it a 5-1 Oberlin advantage heading into the intermission.
The pace would slow down in the second half with each team finding the back of the net one time with the Yeomen tally coming courtesy of
Xander Francoeur with the help of an
Antony Commissaris lead pass. It marked Francoeur's team-high sixth tally of the year and third straight game with at least one goal.
Oberlin finished with a 24-11 margin in shots, including a 14-5 differential in shots on goal.
Louis Berger played the front 45 minutes in goal and made one save while
Luke Yates had two stops in the second half.
The victory leveled the Yeomen's record at 4-4 on the year while Allegheny dropped back to 2-5-1.
Oberlin will closeout its seven-game homestand on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. against Ohio Wesleyan.
