Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Volleyball Sweeps Competition at MIAA/NCAC Challenge

Olivet, Michigan- Off to their best start in over a decade, the Oberlin College volleyball team sailed past Kalamazoo 3-0 (25-14, 25-23, 28-26) and Alma 3-1 (25-20, 25-21, 21-25, 25-23) on Saturday afternoon. The Yeowomen finish MIAA/NCAC Challenge undefeated at 3-0 and extend their win streak to six behind a 6-1 overall record.

In their morning match against Kalamazoo, the hitting duo Andréa Jones and Zeynep Kaya notched 11 kills each as Jones added to her offensive prowess with a team-high three service aces. Junior Taylor Gwynne set up 35 assists in the victory, adding a pair of kills and digs as well. Cami Sweet gave way to an impressive effort as she tallied eight kills and hit .636 over their three-set sweep.

After a slow start to the opening set, the Yeowomen made quick work of the Hornets, securing the first set victory with a 9-1 run. Kalamazoo battled back after going down 2-0 to Oberlin, forcing the set into extra points. Back-to-back kills from Sweet and Jones gave the Yeowomen the 3-0 (25-14, 25-23, 28-26) win.

Although playing their second game of the day almost immediately after completing their first, Oberlin kept the momentum rolling against Alma. A more balanced attack in this match, Jones still led the way with a team-high 12 kills. Lauren Sands followed close with nine kills, while Iyanna Lewis put away another seven. Eight different Yeowomen earned points over the team's four sets. Keeping consisten, Gwynne paced the way in Oberlin's assist game with 34 while Zoe Kuzbari, Lindsey Felton, Zeynep, and Jones chimed in with their own efforts as well.

Although the Crimson and Gold had secured a 2-0 lead, the Alma Scots capitalized from a handful of Yeowomen errors in the third set to hold off the impending Oberlin victory. The Yeowomen battled from behind in the fourth set, eventually overcoming their competition after a late-set kill and block from Lewis.

The Yeowomen take a much deserved week-long break before returning to competition on Friday, September 16 as they host the Oberlin Invite. The Crimson and Gold will play host to John Carroll, Haverford, and Chatham in a round-robin tournament starting at 5pm on Friday. Oberlin Athletics will have a live stream available here and live stats available here.
