Oberlin, Ohio- In their season opener, the Oberlin College men's soccer team fell in a hard fought 2-0 match again John Carroll on Thursday night.
Â
The Yeomen saw a pair of rookies make their collegiate debut as
Matthew Taubman and
Quinn Severs earned spots among the starting XI. The opening kickoff began the evenly matched battle as both the Yeomen and Blue Streaks swapped possession before JCU took the game's first shots on goal. Back-to-back saves by Sophomore keeper
Colvin Iorio, the Crimson and Gold kept the Blue Streaks off the board as the half continued. Unable to capitalize on any opportunities, the cross-town foes settled for a 0-0 score at the end of the first half.
Â
Picking up where they left off, the Yeomen tested John Carroll right away off a strong shot from first-year midfielder
Louis Gandelheid at the 54'. Oberlin struck again minutes later as
Toby Wells-Zimmerman took a shot on goal that was saved and ricocheted over to Gandelheid for a header over the crossbar. It wasn't until the 79' that either team scored when JCU beat out Iorio on a one-on-one matchup. The Blue Streaks took advantage of a tired Oberlin minutes later as notched a security goal in the final two minutes.
