Gambier, Ohio – The Oberlin College baseball team finished on the wrong end of a pair of one-run losses, falling 3-2 and 6-5 on Saturday afternoon.
It was an old-fashioned pitcher's duel in game one as
Vince Dolcemaschio and Alex Gow locked horns with Gow getting the best of the Yeomen in the end as he allowed just five hits and one earned run in the complete-game victory. Dolcemaschio was nearly equally impressive he went eight innings, sprinkling 11 and three runs (two earned) while going walk free with five strikeouts.
Oberlin struck first as freshman
Max Cairo delivered a two-out RBI single through the right side to score
Jake Freed.
Kenyon would go out in front in the fourth, using three hits and a critical Oberlin error to take a 2-1 lead. An RBI double by Tripper Capps in the fifth extended the Kenyon cushion to two.
Oberlin didn't threaten in the sixth or seventh but did trim the gap down to one in the eighth as a Lords' miscue allowed
Alex Vaughan to come across the dish.
The Yeomen would get a two-out base runner in the ninth but nothing would materialize as Gow finished off his gem.
Freshman
Jake Blozy had two of Oberlin's five hits in the setback.
The Lords grabbed a 2-0 lead through the first three innings of game two until the Yeomen got on the board in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by
Joe Strabley to score Yanni Gardner.
Oberlin would even the count in the fifth as junior
John Schooner continued his torrid run at the plate with a two-run single to center to tie the game at the 3-3.
The first two Yeomen hitters would reach in the sixth to chase Kenyon starter Zach Elsawy as the Yeomen claimed a 5-3 advantage on an RBI single by
Max Anastasio and
Chris Wolfe squeezed in Vaughan.
The Lords would go back out in front with three runs in the home half of the sixth and Kenyon reliever Noah Rosenberg would stymie the Yeomen hitters for 3.1 innings before departing with one out in the ninth with seven strikeouts.
Oberlin had a couple of base runners in the ninth but Gardner was erased on a bang-bang call trying to steal second and Schooner would work a two-out walk before Joel Biery fanned pinch hitter
Kyle Grassl to end the game.
The Yeomen finished with 10 hits in the game with Anastasio leading the way with a 4-for-5 effort. Gardner and Schooner each finished with three hits in the loss.
Jacob Thompson (0-3) worked the front five innings on the bump, allowing six runs (five earned) on eight hits and four walks to go along with two strikeouts.
Alexander Norris gave up just two hits in three shutout innings as he fanned four.
The Yeomen are back in action tomorrow at Ohio Northern University. First pitch of the single 9-inning affair is set for 1 p.m.
