Lacrosse Overcomes Flying Dutch in Neutral Duel

Ann Arbor, MI- In their first neutral match since 2020, the Oberlin men's lacrosse team traveled north to Michigan to battle Hope College. The Yeomen held off a late comeback from the Flying Dutch to win 12-11 and advance their overall season record to 2-1.

A trio of Yeomen led the attack against hope as Max Cha, Niko Maheras, and Michael Muldoon each tallied a hat trick and combined for a pair of assists. Minding the goal for Oberlin was Eugene Kang who tallied 15 saves and aided by a defense that brough in 29 groundballs and ten caused turnovers. Senior Kiernan Stone led the defense with three groundballs and four caused turnovers.

After giving up the first goal of the game, Oberlin's Muldoon got the team on the board with a driving shot towards cage. Minutes later, Tom Decker scored off a Hope turnover. Down 3-2 to Hope, Oberlin looked to respond in the second quarter.

Getting done what they set out to do, Maheras got the opening goal before the Flying Dutch responded with a pair of their own. Muldoon found the back of the next for his second goal of the afternoon to set up the Yeomen to score four more unanswered goals. Scoring three of the five goals during the run Cha helped put the Yeomen ahead of the Flying Dutch, 8-6 at the half.

Right off the opening faceoff, Hope got back on the board to come within one of the Yeomen lead. Over the next several minutes the two teams played strong defense, allowing only a trio of shots combined and a huge save on the doorstep form Kang. Although slow going, the Yeomen did manage to get a pair of goals before the quarter expired, coming off the sticks of Maheras and Muldoon.

Right off the opening faceoff, Decker forced a turnover from the goalie that allowed Sam Ryu to sneak upfield for an open net goal. Held scoreless for over six minutes, Oberlin's Maheras broke the drought with a rocket in front of cage. The Yeomen battled to hold off a Flying Dutch comeback in the final minutes of play and secured the 12-11 victory.
