Trio of School Records Fall on Day One of NCAA Championships

Winston-Salem, NC – With four athletes qualifying for the NCAA Championships, the Oberlin track and field team kicked off their 2022 national run on Friday afternoon. Iyanna Lewis, Clare Tiedemann, and Sarah Voit all competed for the Yeowomen, each breaking their respective event's school record.

Lewis began the Yeowomen's efforts in the weight throw, where on her third heave, she set a new career-best and broke the school record that was previously held by Ana Richardson. Hurling for 18.47m (60-08.00), Lewis improved on her pre-competition seeding to finish fourth-overall in the NCAA Championships. The finish earns Lewis All-American honors, the first of her career.

Competing in the pentathlon, Tiedemann opened with the 60m hurdles where she ran a time of 9.15 to finish eighth in the field of 20. Tiedemann followed that up with a career-best performance in the high jump, clearing 1.45m (4-09.00) to sit in 16th after two events. The junior finished the first half of the pentathlon with a 7.66m (25-01.75) throw in the shot put event.

Getting into her final two events, Tiedemann jumped 2.58m (17-04.00) in the long jump to move up in the overall rankings. In her final event, the 800m race, Tiedemann sprinted a near best of 2:27.54 to finish the pentathlon with 3,183 points and earn 13th overall. With 3,183 points, the senior reset her own school record for most points scored in the pentathlon.

Coming in as the #2 seed in pole vault, Voit passed on the first height before clearing her next seven bars. The senior surpassed her previous best and program record of 3.90m (12-09.50) and vaulted over the 3.95m (12-11.50). With only one other competitor remaining, Voit and her opponent failed to clear the 4.00m bar thus resulting in a tie breaker. With three faults to none, Voit lost the tie breaker to finish in second-place and earn indoor All-American honors for the first time in her career.

Just one more athlete remains to compete for Oberlin at the NCAA Championships. Malaïka Djungu-Sungu will suit up tomorrow, March 12 in the triple jump event starting at 11am. A live stream will be available here with live results available here.
