Strong First Day at the NCAC Championships for Oberlin Track & Field

Springfield, OH – The Oberlin College track and field teams opened the 2022 North Coast Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships on Friday in fine fashion.
 
Of the five scored events on the day, the Oberlin women's team claimed three league titles en route to earning a meeting-leading total of 71 points. The Yeomen secured 17 points and rest in sixth place.
 
Sarah Voit added another conference title to her impressive resume with a winning clearance of 11-11.25 in the pole vault, which was six inches higher than the second-place finisher. Iyanna Lewis claimed her first conference crown by topping a 20-person field in the weight throw with a toss of 56-07.25 on her second attempt. The final conference title of the day came on the last event as the foursome of Anna Scott, Lucy Curtis, Margo Lee, and Phoebe von Conta beat out a Wooster grouping in the distance medley relay with a time of 12:35.98, which is currently the 18th-best mark in the country.
 
After her school-record performance at the combined events last weekend, senior Clare Tiedemann added another second-place finish in the long jump at 17-08, while Malaika Djungu-Sungu was one spot back in third at 17-04.25. Senior Aesha Mokashi (6th / 16-07.25) and classmate Jada Kennerly (8th / 16-03.25) also added points for Oberlin.
 
Sophomore Abby Cannon earned All-NCAC honors with a third-place mark of 51-06.50 in the weight throw, giving Oberlin 16 total points in the event.
 
In the scored events on the men's side, it was senior Kofi Asare claiming third in the long jump at 21-05.50 while junior Zac Ntia also added a third-place finish in the shot put with a heave of 48-02.75.
 
The Yeomen's DMR tandem of Walter Moak, Kambinachi Obioha, Ezra Taub, and Sam Russ added five points by placing fourth overall in 10:30.89.
 
In the prelim events, Tiedemann was the top qualifier in the 60-meter hurdles in 9.11, while Chilly Wallace was fifth in 9.36. Tiedemann came right back to take second in the 400-meter prelims in 1:00.61. The New York City was also third in the 200-meter dash in 26.60.
 
First-year Sage Reddish will enter tomorrow's final as the top seed in the 800 meters with their personal-best mark of 2:19.57.
 
Freshman Cole Fuller continued his impressive rookie campaign as the third qualifier in the 400 meters at 50.85.
 
Day two of the NCAC Indoor Championships will get underway tomorrow morning at 10 a.m.
