Oberlin, Ohio – Battling for their first North Coast Athletic Conference victory in the
Shiva Senthil era, the Oberlin College men's basketball team came up short against Hiram in an overtime matchup on Saturday afternoon.
Yuuki Okubo led the way for Oberlin with his first career double-double at 13 points and 14 assists in the 101-98 loss to move the Crimson and Gold to 3-7 on the season and 0-3 in conference play.
In a balanced scoring effort, Oberlin finished with five Yeomen in double digits, as
Dimitrije Radusinovic led the charge with 20 points and five rebounds.
Dorde Otasevic and
Asaan Snipes-Rea combined for 30 points while Otasevic added another 12 rebounds to notch his sixth double-double this season. Okubo and
Andrew Gannon finished with 13 and ten points, respectively.
After a slow start to the game, the Yeomen caught fire, going on a 15-2 midway through the first half. In a balanced scoring effort, both Milum Micanovic and Snipes-Rea tallied four points to lead the charge. Keeping the game within reach, the Terriers responded with back-to-back buckets to cut the Yeomen's lead to five. Jumpers from
Chris Allen Jr. and Otasevic closed out the half as Oberlin headed to the locker room with a 49-43 lead.
The second half started with a trio of Yeomen three-pointers as the Crimson and Gold continued to ride their first half momentum. As the half progressed, Hiram regained the lead after sinking a handful of shots from the charity stripe. Down 79-76 at the 7:16 mark, the Yeomen battled their way back in the game, finally hitting the equalizer as Snipes-Rea drove up court for a layup with 57 seconds left. Tied at 89 all, Hiram missed a layup in the final second, sending the game into overtime.
In the five-minute overtime period, both teams swapped early buckets before the Terries took a five-point lead over the Yeomen. With nine seconds left Otasevic hit a three from deep to cut the lead to two, but too little, too late as the Yeomen fell to the Terriers 101-98.
The Yeomen earn a three-day rest before hitting the court again on Tuesday, December 13. Taking on non-conference foe Adrian, tip off is set for 7pm with a live stream available
