Wooster, Ohio - It was a historic day for the Oberlin College men's cross country team, winning their first North Coast Athletic Conference Championship in program history with five competitors finishing within the top 11 places.
The Yeomen totaled 44 points - 12 points ahead of second-place DePauw who had its four-year winning streak snapped. Oberlin's women's team posted 91 points to finish in third place.
Following the conclusion of the meet,
Ray Appenheimer,
Izzy Alexander, and
Anna Scott were named the NCAC Coaching Staff of the Year for the men's division.
"Our men's team ran relentlessly today on the most challenging course in the conference," Coach Appenheimer said. "They ran together and drew so much energy and belief over the course of the race. As the race got tougher Niels, Ross, Sam, Walter, Jonah and Matt got tougher. An 18 second spread means they saw each other the entire way. They gained so much strength and determination from that. They are happy, they are proud, and they earned the right to call themselves conference champions."
Senior
Niels Vanderloo ran the best race of his career to lead the Yeomen contingency as he clocked in a lifetime best 8k run of 27.05.3 to finish in sixth place and earn All-NCAC first-team honors.
Classmate
Ross D'Orfani was two spots back in 27.11.5 to lead a group of four straight Oberlin finishers who placed 8th-11th and took home All-NCAC second-team laurels. Sophomore
Walter Moak was ninth in 27:17.4, while
Sam Russ was one second back in 27:18.1. The grouping was capped off by
Jonah Barber in 27:23.9.
Senior
Matthew Walton was the first displacer of any runner in the race as he was 13th in 27:31.8 to join the grouping as a second-team all-conference selection, while
Aidan Duffield checked in 29th with a time of 28:12.8 to round out the Yeomen's top-7.
The Yeomen had previously finished no higher than second at the NCAC Championships, doing so in 1990 and 1994. The conference title is also just the second NCAC Championship for Oberlin men's sports and first since the 2015 baseball team.
Running in her final NCAC meet, the senior
Sunniva Sheffield paced the way for Oberlin women as she finished in fifth place with a time of 24:03.7 to earn first-team all-conference for the first time in her career.
Not far behind was
Eliza Medearis (24:56.1) and
Sage Reddish (24:58.1) who finished 17th and 18th, respectively, while securing third-team All-NCAC recognition.
Sophomore
Margo Lee was 26th in 25:37.7 while first-year
Amber Borofsky checked in 35th in 26:17.7 to complete the Yeowomen's point producers.
Their first two displacers were
Ellis Santangelo (26:31.3 / 39th) and
Ish Houle (26:42.0 / 41st).
Wittenberg won the event with 39 points, while DePauw was second with 46 points.
Select members of the team will compete next Friday at the Wooster 5K Twilight, while others will rest ahead of the NCAA Great Lakes Championship meet on November 12.
