Dufour Sets Career Highs in Gritty Loss to Hiram

Oberlin, Ohio – Headed into the final matches of the season, the Oberlin College volleyball team hosted Hiram Terriers for a battle in Philips on Wednesday night. A fight that went into five sets, the Yeowomen lost in heartbreaking fashion 3-2 (23-25, 13-25, 28-26, 25-13, 13-15) to drop to 0-5 in the conference and 7-12 overall.

Leading Oberlin in multiple categories, Natalie Dufour dominated the net with a career-high nine block assists in the team's 16 blocks. The sophomore also led the Yeowomen in kills with 15, totaling a team-high 19.5 points. Both stats, come as career highs for the Bluegrass hitter. Supplementing Dufour's dominance was Cami Sweet who also posted impressive numbers with a pair of solo blocks and four block assists. Sweet also tallied 18 points in the match followed by Iyanna Lewis with 14.5 and ten kills.

Lucy Myers and Taylor Gwynne split time on the court as setters with Meyers leading the ways on 25 assists while Gwynne put up 15 of her own. On the defensive end Jillian Jendsen racked up a team-high 20 digs with Andréa Jones following close behind with 14.

Oberlin followed Hiram point-for-point through the first set but ultimately fell short as the Terriers took the 1-0 lead. The visiting squad continued their momentum into the second set, shutting down the Yeowomen in every facet to earn a 25-13 victory and sit on the verge of sweeping Oberlin.

Entering the third set with a new gameplan, the Crimson and Gold took an early 2-0 lead and maintained it until the teams were tied at 24-24, looking at extra points to claim victory. A pair of kills from Sweet and Myers as well as an ace from Jones clinched the 28-26 to keep Oberlin alive for a fourth set. The Yeowomen completely dominated in the fourth, hitting .400 without conceding a single error to claim a 25-13 revenge victory. As the final set got underway, Hiram capitalized on a trio of Oberlin blunders before Dufour stopped the damage with a kill from Myers. Battling from behind the Yeowomen came within one of the Terriers, but the experience of Hiram overcame the young Oberlin squad as they dealt the final kill to win the match 3-2.

The Yeowomen get back in action as they hit the road for their final away match of the season on Saturday, October 22. Facing their storied rival Kenyon, the match is set to start at 1pm with a live stream available here and live stats here.
