Berea, Ohio – In their final meet on the road before hosting the Annual Oberlin BSN Invitational, the Oberlin College Track and Field team headed east to Berea for the Baldwin Wallace Dr. Taraschke Team Challenge on Saturday.
Kicking off the meet with field events,
Iyanna Lewis took first place in the women's weight throw. The 16.65m she tossed set a new meet record as well as crushing her own personal-best record.
Zac Ntia earned back-to-back silver finishes in the men's weight throw and shotput.
In the jumping events,
Kofi Asare scored for the Yeomen leaping 6.26m on his way to third place in the long jump.
On the women's side, three Yeowomen finished in the top-five, led by
Malaika Djungu-Sungu with a distance of 5.22m; her jump was just .01m off of the meet record. Following Djungu-Sungu was
Aesha Mokashi and
Jada Kennerly with 4.96m and 4.89m, respectively. In the final field event,
Sarah Voit took gold in the pole vault with another record-breaking performance. Clearing 3.90m, the senior not only crushed the previous meet record of 3.68m, but also eclipsed her own best and school-record of 3.87m.
Moving to the track,
Sunniva Sheffield paced the way for the Yeowomen in the women's 5000m race with a time of 19.31.46. The second-place finish earned eight points for the Yeowomen before
Chilly Wallace sprinted to second-place in the 55m hurdle event. In the early preliminary race of the 55m hurdle event,
Clare Tiedemann sprinted a historic time of 8.77. Although not competing in the finals, Tiedemann's time breaks Oberlin's current 55m hurdle record of 8.84 set by Wallace back in 2020.
On the men's side of the 5000m race, a trio of Yeomen finished in the top-five, led by
Aidan Duffield with a time of 16:00.75, less than two second off the leader. Following in third and fifth places were
Daniel Markey and
Jerry Achtermann with times of 16:26.45 and 16:36.68, respectively. Adding to the gold medals for the Yeowomen,
Phoebe von Conta finished first in the women's one mile race with a time of 5:22.79. In the final individual race, Tiedemann sprinted for third in the 400m race. A time of 1:01.61, Tiedemann was just .55 off the meet record.
Capping off a great meet for Oberlin, the Yeowomen's 'Team A' finished in third-place in the 4x400m relay race. Consisting of
Maggie Allen,
Anna Scott, Voit, and
Lucy Curtis, the quartet finished with a time of 4:22.34.
Of the six teams competing, the Yeowomen finished third with a score of 86, while the Yeomen finished fifth with a score of 47.
The Yeomen and Yeowomen get back on the track again next Friday, February 4 this time at home for the annual Oberlin College BSN Invite.
