Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's basketball team suffered through a 77-70 defeat at the hands of the visiting Allegheny College Gators on Wednesday night at Philips Gym.
Coming into the night, the Yeomen were just 22-of-80 (27.5%) from beyond the arc in their last three games and it was more of the same this evening as they finished 8-of-28 from 3-point land, for a subpar 21.1 percent success rate.
Senior
Wolf Moser led the Yeomen scoring attack, dropping in 25 points on 8-of-18 shooting.
Dorde Otasevic added 17 points before fouling out while
Darien Knowles chipped in 12 tallies off the Yeomen bench before he also got dealt an early exit with five fouls.
It was nip-and-tuck throughout the early portion of the opening half. A traditional 3-point play from Knowles cut the Yeomen deficit down to one, 15-14, with just under 12 minutes left in the frame. Moments later a long-range strike from Otasevic had the Yeomen out in front 21-20.
Oberlin later led 23-22 but a 9-2 Allegheny spurt that was capped off by breakaway dunk by Caden Hinckley had the visitors up six and transition triple-hit from Brian Roberts Jr. at the 3:35 mark swelled the Gators lead out to 10, 43-33, with 3:35 left to play. They would ultimately carry the same differential into the locker room at 47-37.
Less than six minutes into the second half, a 3-pointer from Knowles trimmed the gap down to seven at 54-47 but the Gators quickly answered by extending their advantage out to 14. However, the Yeomen wouldn't go away without a fight.
Oberlin used an 8-0 burst to shrink the deficit down to two possession at 66-60 with 5:51 remaining on the running second-half clock. A pair of Moser charity tosses had the Yeomen within five with 2:22 to go but the Gators scored on their ensuing possession and would cash in six free throws down the stretch to finish off the victory.
The Yeomen shot 35.8 percent from the floor, cashing in just 24 of the 67 shots they hoisted on the night. The Gators finished at 41.4 percent with 24 makes on 58 attempts.
Oberlin has now dropped four in row, falling to 5-11 on the year and 3-7 in the NCAC. The Gators are now 5-7 and even 3-3 in league play.
The Yeomen are back in action a week from tonight at The College of Wooster. Tip-time is set for 7:30 p.m.
