Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College volleyball team swept by the visiting Capital University Crusaders by the scores of 25-20, 25-16, and 25-16 on Wednesday night at Philips Gym.
Oberlin used a diverse attack to get by the Crusaders led by rookie
Andréa Jones who dropped in a game-high 10 kills.
Hadley Horne and
Natasha Radic each added nine finishes, while
Iyanna Lewis chipped in with seven kills.
First-year
Taylor Gwynne had the offense in system with 29 assists to accompany her four kills, six digs, and two block solos. Moo DeHaro guided the back row with 12 digs.
The Crusaders scored first in all three sets but it wasn't a problem as the Yeowomen found a way to rally each time. In the opening frame it was tied 15-15 but a send-down from Jones put the Yeowomen out in front for good with game one ultimately being clinched on a sneak-attack finish Gwynne.
Capital scored the first six points of the second set but Oberlin came back to even the count at 13-13 on a kill from Horne. After some more back-and-forth play, Oberlin was clinging to 17-16 advantage but the Yeowomen would close the session with an 8-0 burst to take a 2-0 match lead.
Looking to extend the match, the Crusaders led 11-6 in the early going but a 10-2 Oberlin response run had the home side in the lead by three, 16-13. Like set two, Oberlin led 17-16 and would then cruise with eight straight points down the stretch that featured four kills from Radic.
Oberlin hit .225 for the match with 43 kills against 16 errors on 120 swings, while holding Capital to just a 0.18 clip with 24 kills and 22 errors on 111 attempts.
The win moved Oberlin to 2-3 and dropped Capital back 1-2.
The Yeowomen have a busy weekend ahead as they open the NCAC-MIAA Challenge on Friday night against Olivet College. The first serve is set for 5 p.m.
