Sandusky, OH- In a thrilling five set match, the Yeowomen volleyball team reign victorious, 3-2 (17-25, 25-19, 8-25, 25-19, 9-15) over the Comets of Olivet College. Both teams swapped sets until Oberlin came out on top in a close battle. The win moves the Yeowomen to 3-3 on the season while the Comets drop to 3-4.
Â
Oberlin used a variety of attackers to keep the Comets on their toes, led by freshman
Cami Sweet with 12 kills and sophomore Andréa Jones with 11. Veterans
Natasha Radic and
Iyanna Lewis combined for 15 kills, adding eight and seven, respectively.
Â
Freshman setter
Taylor Gwynne commanded the Yeowomen offense with a total of 29 assists, for the second time this season.
Hadley Horne accounted for a career-high four service aces, while
Lauren Fitts and Gwynne tallied three apiece.
Â
On the defensive end, Sweet got up for a team-high three block assists, aided by Lewis and Jones who combined for three total. Libero
Myriahlea DeHaro dug out the ball 15 times with four other players making significant contributions. Jones, Fitts, Gwynne, and Radic all tallied eight digs each.
Â
The Yeowomen battled for every point, dominating especially in the first and third sets. The match opened with four-straight Oberlin points before the Comets could respond. The momentum carried the Crimson and Gold through the back-and-forth nature of the set, eventually being ended by Gwynne on a skip-set kill.
Â
The second set looked much different for Oberlin as they found themselves quickly down 7-0. The deficit was not enough for the Yeowomen to return from as the match tied up at 1-1 headed into the third set. Oberlin showed nothing short of dominance in the third set, beginning with an 8-1 run. A trio of kills from Jones aided by aces from Horne and DeHaro, gave way for the Yeowomen to take the 2-1 lead.
Â
Looking to close out the match, Oberlin found themselves in a back-and-forth battle with Olivet. An early block from Sweet and Lewis gave the Yeowomen temporary momentum, but not sustainable enough to take the fourth set. Rallying for the final set and the victory, Fitts opened the fifth with a service ace. Several errors from the Comets put Obelrin up early while aggressive offense kept the Yeowomen's lead. Needing just a pair of points to finish the set, Radic and Horne combined for kills to close out the match and earn the 3-2 victory.
Â
This is the third-straight win for the Yeowomen ahead of their double tomorrow Saturday, September 11. Oberlin will take on Kalamazoo at 12:30 pm, followed by Saint Mary's at 2:30. Live stats will be available
