Â
Altoona, PA- On the road for their second game of the year, the Oberlin women's soccer team took on Penn State-Altoona on Saturday afternoon. An early goal from
Camille Franklin gave the Yeowomen the momentum they needed to take down the Lions 5-0 and move their overall record to 2-0.
Â
The game opened with Oberlin flexing their offense and scoring just four minutes into play. Moving quickly up field,
Heather Benway broke loose to find Franklin inside the box for a wide-open shot. Up 1-0 with nearly the entire game to play the Yeowomen worked to extend their lead.
Maya Blevins found the net next as she intercepted the ball from her defender and moved up field to beat the keeper on the left side. Both Franklin and Blevins scored their first goals of the season; Blevins her first of her career. The Lions seemed to settle and slow the game down, holding the Yeowomen off for the final minutes of the half as both teams went to the benches, Oberlin up 2-0.
Â
Oberlin seemed to dominate the first 15 minutes of the second half, with back-to-back shots on goal from Benway and
Grace Burns. With 20 minutes remaining, junior Burns sent a corner kick into the near side of the goal, but the keeper was able to get a hand on it and punched it outside the box. Ball still in the air,
Maricel Mequi met it with her head and sent it into the left corner, putting the Yeowomen up 3-0. Minutes later, Mequi struck again, this time off a pass from
Zoe Garver to send the ball into the cage from the top of the box. The scoring didn't stop there as
Claire Vallely found the back of the net with her first goal of the year to give the Yeowomen the 5-0 advantage late in the game. The Yeowoman defense locked down the rest of the game and held off the Lions earning them their second shutout of the year.
Â
The 5-0 victory marks the first time in the Palmer era that the Yeowomen have started the season with back-to-back shutouts. On the match, Blevins and Vallely tallied the first points of their careers, while Franklin and Mequi earned their first goals of the season. The shutout gives
Isabelle Smith her sixth of her career and moves her to 2-0 on the year.
