Triadelphia, WV- A pair of late scores in the Yeomen's soccer match with Bethany on Saturday evening, gave the team a 2-0 victory.
Antony Commissaris and
Nic Jandeleit combine for the goals in the 64' and 85', respectively. With the win, Oberlin moves to 2-0 on the year. This marks the first time since 2017 the Yeomen have begun their season with a pair of wins.
Â
The first half of the match saw both the Yeomen and Bison swap possession and battle to settle the ball on their end of the field. It was Oberlin's
Brian LaFranchi to get the first shot off and begin the attack for the Yeomen. Minutes later, starting goalie
Parker Whitcomb made back-to-back-to-back saves against Bethany, keeping the Bison off the scoreboard. The Crimson and Gold responded with Jandeleit taking a shot at the center of the cage but was stopped short of the goal line by the Bison keeper. As the clock wound down on the first half,
Toby Wells-Zimmerman and
Xander Francoeur took turns shooting at the net but came up short and sent both teams to the locker room, tied at zero.
Â
The second half opened with faster pace, as veteran
Ben Kessler took a shot just 47 seconds after the whistle. After a fairly quiet 10 minutes,
Thomas Kanter found Commissaris across the box to make some noise and put the Yeomen on the board, 1-0. Bethany battled back to try and find the equalizer, but another clutch save from Whitcomb kept them at bay. With under five minutes remaining in the match, a goal kick from Whitcomb met
Ryan Kim in the midfield, where hrpopped the ball over his head to Jandeleit. From 30 yards out, fancy footwork got Jandeleit past his defender and goalie to tap the ball into the back of the net to put away the Bison in 2-0 shutout.
