Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Defense Battles but Falls Short to Nazareth

Rochester, NY- The Yeowomen field hockey team got their season underway late Saturday morning on the road with the Nazareth Golden Flyers. A close battle saw the Yeowomen fall 2-0 against the Purple and Gold. Oberlin moves to 0-1 on the season ahead of their next road matchup.

The opening quarter got started with plenty of back-and-forth action as both teams tried to settle the ball on their sides of the field. Midway through the quarter, Bonnie Wileman earned three corners in a row, but a stifling Golden Flyer defense prevented the Yeowomen from capitalizing on their shots. As the clock dwindled down, Meredith Warden and Susan Robinson-Cloete got off the first shots of the game. Both shots were saved by Nazareth's goalie, keeping Oberlin off the scoreboard.

The Golden Flyers seemed to have the hot sticks in the second quarter, earning a pair of consecutive corners early on. A tough Oberlin defense kept the ball away from goalie Julia Vincent and forced the end of NC's scoring chance.  Oberlin got their best scoring opportunity of the half as Wileman had the ball just in front of the goal but sent the shot off the post and out of bounds. With the Golden Flyers on the attack, a phenomenal series of saves by Vincent kept the Yeowomen afloat late in the second quarter. As the clock hit zero, both teams remained dead-locked at 0-0 headed into the second half.

Three minutes into the half, Nazareth finally broke the tie as they slipped the ball through the Oberlin defense and into the back of the cage. The momentum for the Golden Flyers continued as they marched downfield and took a shot from the far-side of the cage. Diving for the ball, Vincent ended the play as soon as it started and stopped Nazareth from increasing their lead. It was back-to-back saves for Vincent again just minutes later to keep the Golden Flyers at bay.

Down a goal headed into the final 15 minutes of play, the Yeowomen battled for the equalizer but struggled to slow down the Golden Flyers. Four straight shots and four straight saves from the defense and Vincent held Nazareth but it wasn't enough as the Golden Flyers scored again in the final minutes of play. With a final score of 2-0 the Yeowomen were toppled by the Golden Flyers in their season opener.

The Yeowomen take the pitch next on Wednesday, September 8 as they head back to the buckeye state to take on Ohio Wesleyan in a non-conference matchup. The game is set to start at 7pm with live stream available here and live stats available here.
