Lancaster, PA - The Oberlin College volleyball team opened a three-match weekend, dropping a tight four-set battle at Franklin & Marshall College on Friday night by the scores of 19-25, 25-23, 18-25, and 8-25.
First-year
Andréa Jones led the Yeowomen effort with 10 kills, while sophomore
Taylor Gwynneadded five finishes to go along with a team-high 16 assists and nine digs. Veteran
Natasha Radic chipped in with four kills.Â
Oberlin had nine total blocks led by rookie
Cami Sweet with four.
Natalie Dufour had an all around solid effort with three blocks, two aces and five digs while also matching Sweet with five kills.
Moo DeHaro guided the back row with 12 digs to accompany her team-best four aces.Â
The opening set was nip and tuck throughout and was eventually tied at 18 following a Diplomats' ball handling error. However, Oberlin mustered just one more point down the stretch as Franklin and Marshall pulled away for the six-point win.Â
It was more of the same in game number two with no more than three points ever separating the two foes. The Yeowomen were strong at net throughout the evening and came up with more than one key block in the win.
Iyanna Lewis had a solo denial to put Oberlin out in front 23-22 and the set would ultimately be clinched on Sweet's rejection of Jada West to square the match at a set each.
A pair of service aces from Moo DeHaro service aces had Oberlin out in front 5-1 in the early going of set three but a 7-2 response by the Diplomats put them in the lead by one and they would never trail again. A kill from Gwynne evened the set at 14 but much like game one, F&M increased the pressure late to cruise to the win.Â
The Diplomats carried that finishing momentum from set three over into the fourth as they scored the first 11 points of the session and never looked back to finish off the victory.Â
Oberlin hit .038 for the match with 28 kills against 24 errors. The Diplomats checked in with a .196 clip with 39 send-downs and 17 miscues. F&M also dropped in 14 aces compared to Oberlin's eight.Â
The Yeowomen have their first double-dip tomorrow as they take on York College at 11 a.m. followed by Catholic University at 1 p.m.
