Meadville, PA – The Oberlin College volleyball team suffered a five-set loss at Allegheny College on Wednesday night.
Oberlin won the first set 25-17, but dropped the next two stanzas by the scores of 25-21 and 25-20. The Yeowomen responded with a commanding 25-18 win in the fourth but the Gators raced out to a 5-0 lead in the decisive fifth frame and never looked back in a 13-7 win to clinch the match.
Natash Radic led the way with 15 kills while first-year
Andréa Jones added 14 in the loss. Rookie
Cami Sweet contributed nine finishes, while
Iyanna Lewis chipped in with eight. Sophomore
Taylor Gwynne had the Yeowomen in rhythm as she dished out 42 assists and snuck in six kills to hit a team-high .375.
In the opening-set victory, the Yeowomen were clinging to a 13-11 lead at the halfway point but a 10-4 Oberlin burst left no doubt in the eventual outcome. It appeared as if Oberlin would cruise to a 2-0 match lead with a 7-3 advantage in the early going of set two but the Gators rallied and eventually grabbed a 15-14 lead and would never trail again.
In the third set a kill from Lewis had Oberlin within one at 19-18 but Allegheny would score six of the next eight points in the session to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
After going down 3-0 to start the fourth, the Yeowomen answered with an 8-0 run to reclaim control and even contest. Unfortunately, in the race to 15 the Gators came out hot and Oberlin was unable to recover.
The Yeowomen hit .189 on the night and won the statistical battle with 56 kills compared to the Gators' 49. OC also had nine aces, while Allegheny ended with seven.
The loss dropped Oberlin to 8-6 overall and 1-1 in the NCAC. Allegheny moved to 11-4 and 1-2 in league action.
The Yeowomen are back in action on Saturday at Ohio Wesleyan University. The first serve is set for 1 p.m.
