Oberlin, OH- After having struggled in conference competition over the past two seasons, the Yeowomen soccer team tasted victory as they took down NCAC opponent DePauw on Saturday afternoon. Rookies
Maya Blevins and
Heather Benway both netted goals to secure to win in 2-1 fashion. The Yeowomen advance to 5-4 on the season and 1-0 in the NCAC.
Both teams got off to a slow start in the opening minutes, with Belvins recording the first shot of the match at the 5:17 mark. Followed by a blocked shot by Benway minutes later, the Yeowomen were knocking on the door of the Tigers cage. At 13'
Zoe Garver moved down field to find Belvins open in front of the cage. Making a quick move towards goal, Blevins shot for her second score of the 2021 season. Down a goal to Oberlin, DePauw looked for the equalizer and found their best scoring opportunity of the half at 38:41. DePauw's Sydney Calisto sent a shot towards goal, but
Isabelle Smith stood tall to make the save and send the game into halftime with Oberlin up 1-0.
The Yeowomen continued their momentum into the opening minutes of the second half as
Natacha Lee took aim towards goal only to be saved by the DePauw keeper. Despite a pair of back-to-back saves from Smith, the Tigers managed to even the score at 1-1. It did not take long for Oberlin to respond, as
Sophia Payne connected with Benway to put the Yeowomen back on top with a one goal advantage. Try as they might, DePauw could not sneak the ball through the Crimson and Gold backline as Smith made a pair of saves. In the final minutes of the game, Smith came up big with another save, securing the 2-1 victory for the Yeowomen.
Notching her third goal of the season, Benway is the co-leading scorer for the Yeowomen, next to
Maricel Mequi.
The Yeowomen continue conference action on Saturday, October 2 in an away match against Ohio Wesleyan. Kickoff is set for 1pm with live stream available
