Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Yeomen Win Conference Opener Over DePauw

Oberlin, Ohio - The Oberlin College men's soccer team picked a perfect time to end a six-match winless streak as they topped the visiting DePauw University Tigers, 2-1, to open up North Coast Athletic Conference play on Saturday afternoon at Fred Shults Field in front of a large alumni crowd.

The victory moved the Yeomen to 3-5-1 overall and marked an important jumpstart to NCAC play.

The two foes were feeling each other out in the center of the park in the early going with the Tigers eventually breaking through first off a corner kick service from Flynn Sheehan that found the head of Nick Mourouzis for his first goal of the season in the 36th minute.

However, it didn't take long for the Yeomen to find the equalizer as junior Jon Schafer powered his way through the Tigers' rearguard to send his first goal of the season and second of his career just a minute later to even the count heading into intermission.

Following the break, the Yeomen increased their work rate, earning a few early chances that never came to fruition. After having a shot turned away by goalie Alex Lundin in the 48th minute, moments later Nic Jandeleit sent a laser off the crossbar and Alex Caceres' follow attempt flew wide.

The Tigers would put together a few promising responses but senior goalie Parker Whitcomb made a pair of big saves to keep the game level heading into crutch time.

The Yeomen would ultimately register the game-winner in the 72nd minute as first-year Toby Wells-Zimmerman notched his first-career assist after a beautiful lead pass to Carceres for his second tally of the year and third of his career.

Whitcomb finished with five saves to run his season total to 45 and his career ledger to an even 100.

Oberlin had a slight 15-14 edge in shots, but it was the Tigers who put six of their attempts on frame compared to just four for the Yeomen. However, the Yeomen doubled-up the Tigers on corners, 6-3.

The Yeomen will step back out of conference on Wednesday night as they make the short trek over to Baldwin Wallace University. The first touch is set for 7 p.m.
