Oberlin, Ohio – On a soaking wet night at the Austin E. Knowlton Athletics Complex, the Oberlin College women's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking last-second defeat that sent the visiting Westminster College Titans home with a 1-0 victory over the Yeowomen.
A foul just outside the box in the closing seconds setup the Titans with a setpiece opportunity. Oberlin senior keeper
Isabelle Smith turned away the initial attempt from Natalie Vilchek but the rebound went to the feet of Sophia Kaplan, who alertly crossed it over to the near post to Mackenzie Powell who was left all alone for the game-winner with just eight ticks left.
The Titans came into the night having conceded just three goals all season and their stingy backline kept the Yeowomen in check all night long, registering their fourth clean sheet in seven games.
Oberlin mustered just six shots in the match with
Zoe Garver leading the way with three. Garver also had the Yeowomen's lone shot on goal, which didn't come until the 87
th minute of the contest.
The fixture featured a steady diet of back-and-forth play in the center of the park with each team trying to attack off the counter. The Titans proved to be more fruitful with their chances as they triggered 14 shots with half of those being on frame. Westminster also earned six corners compared to Oberlin's four.
Smith did her part to keep Oberlin close, making six saves on the night to run her season account to 33.
The loss dropped the Yeowomen back to 4-4 on the year, while the Titans remained unbeaten at 6-0-1.
The Yeowomen will conclude their four-match homestand when they open up conference play on Saturday afternoon against DePauw University. The first touch is set for 3 p.m.
