Oberlin, OH – First-year
Samantha Gilfond headed in a setpiece service from
Brynn Adams with 2:31 left to play to lift the Oberlin College women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over the Franciscan University Barons on Saturday night at Fred Shults Field.
A native of New York City, Gilfond, played a role in both Oberlin tallies as she setup classmate
Natacha Lee for the equalizer earlier in the second half.
It was a tale of two sessions for the Yeowomen as the Barons controlled the pace and tempo throughout the opening stanza and they would ultimately carry a 1-0 lead into the intermission on the strength of Bella Rubino's team-leading fifth goal of the season as she weaved her way through the Oberlin rearguard in the 38th minute.
Oberlin came out of the break with a renewed sense of urgency, applying more pressure on the Barons' backline. In the 52nd minute a dangerous ball into the box eventually ended up at the feet of
Adrienne Sato who had her attempt turned away by Rebekka Dill.
After a few more promising chances went by the wayside, the Yeowomen eventually recorded the equalizer as Gilfond found Lee on the back post for her first-career in the 79th minute.
Moments later
Madeline Lynam had a nice look at a potential game-winner but couldn't get enough on it to get by Dill. However, Oberlin kept coming and would avoid overtime on the last-minute heroics from Gilfond.
Isabelle Smith made three big saves in the win to run her season total 27.
Oberlin finished with a 10-6 advantage in shots, including a 6-4 edge in shots on goal while working its way for four corner tries compared to just one for Franciscan.
With the victory the Yeowomen moved to 4-3 on the year, matching their win total from all of 2019. The loss dropped the Barons back to 2-2 on the season.
The Yeowomen are back in action at home on Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. against Westminster College. The Yeomen will first tangle with the Titans at 4:30 p.m.
