Oberlin, Ohio – Playing on the home pitch of Fred Shults Field for the first time in 686 days, the Oberlin College women's soccer team had its homecoming spoiled as the visiting Heidelberg University Student Princess escaped town with a 2-1 overtime victory on Tuesday night.
The run of play was controlled by the Yeowomen throughout the near 95-minute affair but missed opportunities proved costly in the end as Bekah Thomas finished off a double cross on the near side from Audrey Kaufman and Lexi Foley to send the visitors home happy.
Oberlin led 1-0 at the intermission as
Madeline Lynam headed home her second goal of the year off a long service from
Grace Hayes after she had the ball played back to her by
Samantha Gilfond.
It took Heidelberg just 44 seconds into the second half to find the equalizer as Kaufmann netted her team-leading fifth goal of the season as she beat her marker down the middle and deposited a cross from the far side from Thomas.
It would remain even the rest of the way but the Yeowomen certainly had a plethora of chances to flip the script but Berg netminder Meredith Bruce made five of her eight saves in the second half and added one more in the extra session to keep Oberlin off the board.
Brynn Adams, who put two of her three shots on target, had Oberlin's final game-winning chance turned away off a corner in overtime and just moments later the Berg would race down to deposit the game-ending tally.
Zoe Garver triggered a team-high six shots off the Oberlin bench – three of which were on frame.
Oberlin finished with a 20-11 advantage in shots, including a 9-6 margin in shots in goal. The Yeowomen also earned 10 corners compared to six for the Berg.
Isabelle Smith went the distance between the pipes and made four saves in the setback.
The loss dropped Oberlin back to an even 3-3 on the year, while Heidelberg moved to 3-1.
The Yeowomen are back in action at home on Saturday night against Franciscan University at 7 p.m.
