Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Late Push Gives Yeowomen Victory over Cougars

Pittsburgh, PA- Truly a battle to the final minute, the Oberlin women's soccer team defeated the Chatham Cougars 1-0 on the tails of an 87' goal from Heather Benway. The road win improves the Yeowomen's season record to 3-2, while it drops Chatham to 1-2.

After one early shot from the Cougars, the Yeowomen took control, tallying shots from Sofia Mitchell, Brynn Adams, Maya Blevins, and Benway. Oberlin continued their strong play and stifling defense as Isabelle Smith made a pair of saves in the early going. The Yeowomen struggled to put together another scoring opportunity in the final minutes of the half. Chatham launched two shots in the last 30 seconds, but with neither on target, both teams headed into the locker room deadlocked at zero.

Just two minutes into the second period, Adrienne Sato got the offense going with a shot sent just wide of the net. Smith and her backline accounted for another pair of saves. A corner kick in the 62' looked like a golden opportunity for Oberlin to score but Chatham's keeper stopped Sophia Payne's shot short of the net. The Yeowomen backline had their work cut out for them in the second half, holding the Cougars to no goals from eight different shots. In the 87' minute with just the third shot of the half for the Crimson and Gold, Benway made her way through the Chatham defense and sent a shot into the back of the net. The Yeowomen were able to hold onto their lead for the final minutes of the match to take down the Cougars in a 1-0 victory.

The Yeowomen take the pitch again next Tuesday, September 14 to play the first game of a four-match home stand. Oberlin takes on Heidelberg on Shults Field. Kickoff is set for 7pm with live stream available here and live stats available here.
