Danville, KY- The Oberlin men's soccer team took Spalding into a double overtime match that ended in a 2-2 tie on Friday night. A first half goal by
Nic Jandeleit and a late match score from
Toby Wells-Zimmerman put the team ahead up until a final minute goal by the Golden Eagles tied the match. The final moves Oberlin's overall record to 2-1-1, while Spalding moves to 1-2-1.
The first half of action was primarily controlled by the Golden Eagles, who tallied the first pair of shots on goal. Starting keeper
Parker Whitcomb managed to save the first, but the second shot rolled past the goal line to give Spalding the early lead. It only took ten more minutes for the Yeomen to respond as Jandeleit found his way inside the box to receive a pass from
Anthony Pacewicz for the goal. Tied at 1-1, both teams swapped possession over the remaining minutes of the half, unable to muster any shots before time expired.
Once the second half got underway, the Yeomen went straight to work as Jandeleit, Wells-Zimmerman, and
Brian LaFranchi all recorded shots from up top. The Crimson and Gold backline steadied the team and held off the Golden Eagles, making way for another scoring push from the Yeomen. In the 66', Jandeleit made his way downfield to find Wells-Zimmerman out in front of the goal for a shot into the net. The score gave Oberlin the 2-1 advantage in the final 25 minutes of regulation. The Yeomen looked like they would be able to close out the match, but in the final seconds before the horn, Spalding's Chadrack Mulondani slipped behind the defense to score the equalizer. Tied at 2-2, the teams took the sidelines and prepared for sudden-victory overtime.
The first overtime was quiet for both teams, as each only recorded a single shot on goal. For the Golden Eagles, it was the man-of-the-hour, Mulondani, who took aim at the net, but Whitcomb managed to get in front of the ball and keep Oberlin's hopes alive. Scoring leader Jandeleit took a late shot on goal for the Yeomen but the Golden Eagles keeper saved the upper-left rocket. The second overtime proved to be similar with Spalding recording the only two shots of the period. The extra time was not enough to decide a victor, and the match ended in a 2-2 draw.
The Yeomen will stay in Kentucky for their next match on Saturday, September 11 against host college, Centre. The teams are set to faceoff under the lights, starting at 7:30pm. A live stream will be available
