Oberlin, Ohio – Playing an official competitive match for the first time in 663 days, the Oberlin College volleyball team dropped a four-set affair to the Case Western Reserve University Spartans by the scores of 13-25, 15-25, 25-15, and 8-25 on Wednesday night.
The rust and nerves were prevalent in the early going for the Yeowomen as they had a combined 17 kills and 17 errors over the first two sets. However, Oberlin's talent would shine through in the third where they hit .211 with 13 kills on 38 swings. Unfortunately, the momentum did not carry over into the fourth as the Spartans jumped on the Yeowomen early and never looked back to finish off the victory.
Junior
Iyanna Lewis was a bright spot for Oberlin as she finished with 11 kills on 27 attempts, while highly-touted first-year
Andréa Jones added seven finishes in her first collegiate match.
Playing their first match for Oberlin, sophomore
Taylor Gwynne and junior
Lucy Myers split the setting duties as they each registered 14 assists. Sophomore
Moo DeHaro guided the back row with 14 digs and joined Lewis,
Lauren Sands, and
Julia Hall as those with a service ace.
While the Yeowomen flashed in the decisive third-set win, consistency was an issue as they finished the match with 35 kills against 34 errors. On the other end, Case had 40 kills and just 18 miscues.
Oberlin has a busy weekend ahead with three matches across state lines in Pennsylvania. First up will be a 7 p.m. tilt against Franklin and Marshall College on Friday night.
