Crawfordsville, IN – Five Oberlin College men's basketball players finished in double figures as the Yeomen erased an early 17-point deficit to earn an 87-85 victory over the Wabash College Little Giants on Saturday afternoon.
After struggling to score over their last three games, it was a much different story for the Yeomen as they cashed in 13 of their 26 triple-tries while ending the game with a 52.6 percent success rate with 30 makes on 57 attempts.
Aidan Oliver was simply sensational off the Yeomen bench, matching
Wolf Moser for a team- and career-high 17 points on 5-of-6 shooting, which included a perfect 4-of-4 showing from distance.
Dimitrije Radusinovic contributed 15 points, five rebounds, and three assists, while his fellow countryman
Dorde Otasevic added 13 points and was one rebound shy of a double-double.
Darien Knowles netted 13 points of his own as he and Oliver combined to outscore the Little Giants bench bunch 30-15.
Midway through the opening half it appeared as if the Little Giants were going to cruise to an easy victory as they built up a 36-19 lead with just over eight minutes left in the frame. However, the Yeomen worked their way back into the game with an 11-0 run that featured two triple-hits from Radusinovic and one from Moser to shrink the gap down to just six.
Wabash would temporality slow down the Yeomen, increasing its lead back out to 10, 41-31, at the 4:33 mark but the Yeomen closed out the half with a 10-2 spurt that featured six points from Oliver to make it just a 43-41 Wabash advantage at the break.
The Little Giants regrouped out of the intermission to extend the differential back out to 10 less than five minutes into the second half, but the Yeomen answered with a pair of threes from Knowles and one more from Oliver to trim the deficit to just a single tally. One of three long-range strikes from Moser would give Oberlin its first lead of the game at 66-65 with 10:13 left to play and just over a minute later a fastbreak layup from Radusinovic made it 69-67 and the Yeomen would never trail again.
With no more than two possessions separating the two foes down the stretch, the game was tied at 80-80 with 2:46 remaining but a pair of clutch jumpers from
Yuuki Okubo and a couple of clutch free throws from Oliver extend the Yeomen lead out to six with 28 ticks left. The Little Giants did make it dicey in the final seconds but the Yeomen were able to survive a last-ditch effort to hang on for the win.
The victory snapped a four-game skid for the Yeomen as they improved to 3-4 overall and evened up their conference mark at 1-1. Wabash fell to 4-3 overall and match Oberlin at 1-1 in the league.
The Yeomen return home to host Kenyon College on Thursday night at 7 p.m.
