Oberlin Basketball Drops Home Opener on Buzzer Beater

Oberlin, OH – The Oberlin men's basketball team hosted Manchester for their home opener on Saturday afternoon. In a game that came down to the wire, Oberlin fell 75-73 to the Spartans to drop to 2-1 on the season.

Starting with a layup from Dimitrije Radusinovic, the Yeomen took an early lead in the first half. Senior Wolf Moser extended that lead to 11-4 with a shot from behind the arc. The Spartans kept fighting and minutes later tied the game at 16-16 with 13:24 remaining in the half. Manchester scored again but a three-pointer from Andrew Gannon evened the score again at 18 all. The momentum stayed on the side of the visitors as they went on a 14-5 run to take a 32-23 lead. Junior Cole Otley ended the drought with a turn around jumper assisted from Henry Leiber. The Yeomen struggled to create more offensive action as the clock hit zero, taking the teams into halftime with Manchester leading 42-32.

As the second half got underway, the Yeomen came swinging led by Radusinovic scoring the first three points. The Oberlin squad went point for point with the Spartans, highlighted by a three-pointer from Otley at the 16:17 mark. Yuuki Okubo and Moser each drove for layups in the next two minutes to bring the Yeomen within six. Moser followed that up with eight-straight points to set the score at 55-52. Okubo found Radusinovic at the ten-minute mark for a three-pointer to tie the game for the first time since early in the opening half. With momentum now on their side, Oberlin went on a 12-6 run before the final five minutes of the game.  Taking a timeout to slow down the Yeomen, the Spartans came back with a strategic offense to tie the game again at 69-69. With on minute of action remaining, Moser connected with Radusinovic to take the lead, but Manchester immediately responded to regain it. Down by one with seconds left, Okubo was fouled and went to the line, shooting two. Hitting the two most important shots of the game, Okubo put the Yeomen up 73-72 with six seconds to go. The celebration was short live though, as the Spartans hit a buzzer-beater out the timeout to end the Crimson and Gold comeback.

In the 74-72 loss, the upperclassmen led the way for the Yeomen as Moser scored a team-high 20 points and Otley hit four three-pointers. Radusinovic notched his first career double-double scoring 16 points and bringing in an impressive 18 rebounds.

The Yeomen look to rebound from the loss on Tuesday, November 23 when they travel to Pittsburgh to take on Carnegie Mellon. Tip-off is set for 8pm with the live stream available here and live stats available here.
