Oberlin, OH- The Oberlin women's soccer team took on the Wittenberg Tigers on Shults Field, Saturday evening. Although entering the match undefeated in conference play, the Yeowomen were shutout by the Tigers as Wittenberg took the 1-0 victory. The setback puts Oberlin at 6-5 on the season and 2-1 in the NCAC.
Freshman forward,
Heather Benway got the Crimson and Gold going in the early minutes, taking an excellent shot on cage followed by a corner kick opportunity. Although an unfruitful offensive possession,
Isabelle Smith and the Oberlin backline kept Wittenberg scoreless combining for three saves and a blocked shot. The Yeowomen and Tigers battled for scoring opportunities, but neither were able to capitalize until Abby Sphar earned her first goal of the season late in the half. With no more shots coming after the goal, the teams went to benches, Tigers up 1-0 at the half.
Looking energized and ready to even the score, Oberlin came out strong in the second half as senior captain
Madeline Lynam sent a rocket that ricocheted off the crossbar in the 49'. The Yeowomen remained in possession of the ball for a pair of corner kicks, but the Tigers defense prevailed, keeping Oberlin off the scoreboard. Maintaining their momentum,
Morgan Cianfichi and
Natacha Lee recorded back-to-back shots on goal with both being stopped by the Wittenberg keeper. Coming down to the final minutes of the match,
Zoe Garver broke away from her defender in the midfield and took aim towards net. Wittenberg's Emma Schewe made the save and managed to hold off the Yeowomen's late push for the remainder of the match. After 90 minutes, Oberlin dropped their first NCAC match 1-0 to Wittenberg.
The Yeowomen continue conference action next Tuesday, October 12 as they hit the road to take on Allegheny. Kickoff is set for 7pm with live stream available
