Meadville, PA – The Oberlin College women's soccer team crossed state lines on Tuesday night to take on the Allegheny College Gators on the blue turf in Meadville, Pennsylvania, and came home with a 1-1 double overtime draw.
The opening stanza was played mostly in the center of the park as the two teams were unable to post a tally on the board as they each took four shots. Oberlin put half of its attempts on frame with
Jordyn Nadley and
Mattie Rie each being denied by Allegheny keeper Gabby Culotta.
The Yeowomen picked up the pace in the second session and controlled the run of the play but it was the Gators who ultimately netted the game's first goal in the 58
th minute when Taylor McKindley took advantage of a misplay on the backline and sent a shot inside the top part of the cage.
The Gators would return the favor in the 75
th minute as a miscue by their rearguard resulted in
Maya Blevins picking up her third goal of the year to even the match.
Sofia Mitchell lifted a long free ball into the box that the Allegheny defender headed backwards towards her own goal and Blevins was there to flick it in for the equalizer.
The Yeowomen kept up the offensive pressure as they worked for the go-ahead score with Mitchell,
Heather Benway, and Blevins each having a look in the final 20 minutes that never came to fruition.
In extra time the Yeowomen trigged two shots but
Madeline Lynam's rifle was blocked and
Natacha Lee had one sail wide. However, senior goalie
Isabelle Smith was challenged twice in the final minute, punching away Emily Orr's service from the nearside corner and then moments later corralling Taylor McKindley's shot off the ensuing corner kick to preserve the draw.
Smith finished with five saves to run her season total to 55 and career account to 215.
Oberlin had a slight 14-13 edge in shots, including a 7-6 margin in shots on goal. However, the Gators ended with an 8-6 advantage in corners.
The result marked the Yeowomen's first tie of the season as they are now 6-5-1 and 2-1-1 in the NCAC. The Gators picked up their first league point as they moved to 4-8-1 overall and 0-2-1 in league play.
Oberlin returns to host Hiram College on Homecoming Friday night at 7 p.m.
