Oberlin, OH- In their final match before the start of North Coast Athletic Conference action, the Oberlin field hockey team suffered a 1-0 loss to Washington and Jefferson College. The setback puts the Yeowomen at 0-9 on the season, while the Presidents move to 3-5.
The Presidents got off to an early start in the game, notching their first goal in less than one minute. The Yeowomen looked to respond but WJU had the momentum on their side, taking a trio of shots on cage. Senior keeper
Julia Vincent got in front of the ball to keep the Presidents from adding to their lead before the end of the quarter.
The second quarter looked much different for both teams as they swapped possession through much of the period. Oberlin earned a penalty corner midway through the quarter, but a tough WJU defense held the squad without a shot. Each side of the field saw its fair share of action, but the Yeowomen were unable to find the equalizer as the first half ended, Presidents up 1-0.
As the second half got underway, Washington and Jefferson found a burst of energy, setting their sights on cage. Vincent made an early save followed by a blocked shot to get the period started. The Yeowomen made their way downfield to challenge WJU but were unable to come up with a shot. Headed into the final quarter of action, the Presidents looked to score a quick insurance goal. The combination of Vincent and her strong backline held the Presidents off to keep a close game. Oberlin battled back-and-forth to come up with any kind of offensive momentum and, with less nine minutes remaining, they were able to do just that.
Ruby Schreiber connected with the ball and took aim at net, but the Presidents' goalie came up with the save. Although pushing for a goal until the final whistle, Oberlin never found the back of the net and dropped the close match, 1-0 to Washington and Jefferson.
The Yeowomen take the field again later this week for the start of North Coast Athletic Conference competition. Oberlin will play host to DePauw on Saturday, October 9 on Bailey Field. The match is set to begin at 11am with live stream available
