Yeomen Soccer Falls in Home Finale to No. 17 Kenyon

Oberlin, Ohio - The Oberlin College men's soccer team wrapped up the home portion of their 2021 schedule, dropping a 3-2 decision to the visiting Kenyon College Lords on Wednesday night at Fred Shults Field.

The Lords, who rank 17th in the nation and third in the region, came into tonight having conceded just three goals in conference play all season but the Yeomen certainly gave them all they could handle on this night.

A hard slide tackle in the box resulted in the Lords being awarded a penalty kick in the 13th minute and Scott Upton stepped up to the spot and sent in his fifth goal of the year for the lone tally of the opening half.

Oberlin freshman keeper Colvin Iorio made just his second start of the season in goal and kept Oberlin close with three first-half saves. The Columbus, Indiana, native ended with 10 stops on the night to keep the Yeomen within striking distance.

After carrying a 1-nil lead into the intermission, it didn't take long for the Lords to increase their advantage as Sebastain Gaese notched his eighth goal of the year in the 51st minute with the help of Gerarado Martinez feed.

Despite playing without senior stalwarts Ryan Kim and Alex Caceres in the second half, the Yeomen displayed their resiliency as they kept challenging the Lords. They would be rewarded for their efforts in the 54th minute by cutting the deficit in half as senior Nic Jandeleit deposited his 10th goal of the year after taking a nice lead pass from Xander Francoeur

Sam Carson would respond with his fourth score of the year in the 61st minute to give Kenyon some breathing room temporality but the Yeomen kept coming and wouldn't go down without a fight.

After a couple of high-target shots from Augie Smith, Oberlin would once again trim the the Kenyon cushion down to one as Ben Kessler sent a beautiful set-piece service into the box that was headed home by Toby Wells-Zimmerman in the 83rd minute for his third marker of the year.

Unfortunately, an offside call down the stretch waived off Oberlin's only real chance at equalizer in the closing moments as the Lords were able to escape town with the victory.

The loss dropped Oberlin back 5-9-3 overall and 3-4-1 in the NCAC. Kenyon remained unblemished in league play, moving to 8-0-0 and to 13-1-1 overall.

Despite the result, the Yeomen still have hope for an NCAC Tournament berth heading into Saturday's regular season finale at Wabash. Oberlin will need to win the game and have both Denison beat Wooster and Kenyon beat DePauw.

The first touch between the Little Giants and Yeomen is set for 1 p.m.
