Granville, OH- After holding off an aggressive attack from Denison for the entirety of regulation, the Yeowomen fell to the conference leaders 1-0 in overtime. The loss drops the Oberlin squad to 7-6-1 and 3-2-1 in the NCAC.
Â
Sitting atop the conference standing coming into the match, Denison aimed to defend their seat with a quick start to the game. A pair of early shots on
Isabelle Smith were blocked and sent high, forcing the Yeowomen to double down on defense. The Big Red came back with another series of back-to-back shots, but the back line stepped to the challenge and kept Denison off the scoreboard. Oberlin finally got their foot on the ball in the 20' as
Heather Benway took a shot that missed just left of the goal. As the clock counted down to within one minute,
Grace Burns slipped through the Big Red midfield towards the opposing cage. A strong Denison defense managed to get between Burns and the ball and prevent the Yeowomen from getting the opening score. With neither team able to convert any shots, Oberlin and Denison took to the benches to rest before the second half.
Â
The second half opened like the first, with Denison getting the first shot and sending the ball high of Smith. Already benefiting from second half adjustments, Oberlin's offense got their second shot as
Natacha Lee sent the ball off to the left of the cage. The Big Red offense continued to tire the Yeowomen defense but, determined to keep their opponent scoreless, Oberlin kept Denison from taking any shots on goal for the remainder of the half.
Â
Headed into overtime scoreless, the Oberlin attack looked to notch their first shot on goal, but Denison beat them to it. A shot from the far corner outside of the box, launched into the upper left corner and gave the Big Red the golden goal they were looking for. The 1-0 win keeps Denison undefeated in NCAC play and atop the conference standings.
