Upset Bid Falls for Short for Yeomen Football

Oberlin, Ohio - The Oberlin College football team gave the visiting College of Wooster Fighting Scots all they could handle but in the end it wasn't enough as Wooster escaped town with a 28-24 win on Saturday afternoon at the Austin E. Knowlton Athletics Complex.

After taking over with 12:46 left on the fourth-quarter clock and looking for the go-ahead score, the Yeomen methodically worked their way down the field, running 16 plays for 52 yards and eating up 7:49. However, the last five plays did not go their way, which effectively ended the game.

On 4th-and-1, quarterback Chris Allen Jr. raced up the middle for a 7-yard gain down to the Scots' 17-yardline and the very next play he would rip off a 13-yard scramble to set up a would-be 1st-and-goal but it was called back due to a hold. A pair of incomplete passes sandwiched around a sack left the Yeomen with a 4th-and-30 that they did not convert.

With Wooster taking over with 4:57 left to play, the Yeomen defense needed to make a stop to give themselves one last chance but the power running of Andrew Yanssens allowed the Scots to salt the game away. Yanssens had 41 yards rushing on the drive and a 7-yard catch as well to seal the victory.

Allen Jr. finished 26-of-34 passing for 272 yards and two scores to go along with his 40 yards on the ground. Tight end Brandon Davies led all pass catchers in the game with seven snags for a game-high 82 yards while senior Kobe Brooks rushed 19 times for 65 yards and a touchdown.

The Yeomen defense forced the Scots to punt on their first two possessions of the game as Oberlin took a 7-0 first-quarter lead on a 13-yard scoring strike to Bear Broyles to cap off a 10-play, 86-yard drive that lasted 5:05.

Wooster would even the count at 7-7 on a Mateo Renteria 1-yard QB sneak early in the second quarter before grabbing a 14-7 advantage on Carter Warstler's 75-yard punt return touchdown.

However, the Yeomen responded well, tying the game at 14-14 on their ensuing drive as Brooks raced up the middle untouched from 10 yards out for his first-career touchdown with just under eight minutes left in the half.

Both teams would add touchdowns on their next possessions to cap off a 35-point quarter and level the score at 21-21 at the intermission. The final Yeomen touchdown of the game came courtesy of Jack Diskin who was left all alone for a 13-yard TD to end a 10-play, 71-yard jaunt with just 33 seconds left in the half.

The Scots would post seven on their first drive of the second half and Oberlin tried to rebuttal once again, moving the ball 60 yards on 14 plays but ultimately had to settle for a 32-yard Sam Bingaman field goal to trim the deficit down to four.

In the fourth, the two teams would trade 3-and-outs before the Yeomen had what proved to be their final chance that never came to fruition.

Oberlin out gained the Scots 404 to 334 and ran 74 plays compared to their 59.

David Harris led the defense with 11 tackles while Luca Friedman added 10.

The Yeomen return to the road next week as they cross state lines to take on the Little Giants of Wabash at 1 p.m.
