Oberlin, OH- A second half push from the Denison Big Red gave the rival a 2-1 victory on Tuesday night. The loss sets the Yeomen back to an overall record 5-7-3 and 3-2-1 in conference play.
Â
The NCAC foes got off to a slow start on Tuesday night, until the Yeomen's leading scorer,
Nic Jandeleit, took the first shot at cage seven minutes into the match. The Big Red finally responded ten minutes later with a laser to the short corner of the cage, but
Parker Whitcomb dropped low to prevent Denison from getting on the scoreboard. The two teams continued to go back and forth in the midfield, but the Yeomen back line did their due diligence, holding the Big Red to only two shots in the first 45 minutes. Scoreless as the half expired, Oberlin and Denison took to their respective sidelines, preparing for the next half of action.
Â
After a quiet first half, the Yeomen came out ready to get the offense rolling at the start of the second period. Just under four minutes into action,
Xander Francoeur got the Yeomen on the board with a long shot that curved perfectly into the upper left corner of the net. Knowing they need an equalizer to stay in the game, Denison found their answer late in the 62' to tie the game at 1-1. With the match deadlocked, and neither team able to get a good shot on goal, Jandeleit made a move inside the box only to get fouled immediately. Earning a penalty kick and an opportunity to tie the game, Jandeleit took to the dot and sent a shot into the left side of the goal but the opposing keeper managed to read his movements and make the save.
Â
The Big Red continued on their attack, slipping through the Yeomen back line and notching the winning goal in the 79'. Oberlin made a last minute attempt to tie the game, but unable to convert a shot, the Big Red triumphed in the 2-1 victory.
