Meadville, PA – Senior
Nic Jandeleit cashed in his team-leading seventh goal of the season in overtime to lift the Oberlin College men's soccer team to a thrilling 2-1 victory at Allegheny College on Wednesday afternoon.
Jandeleit's 18
th career tally couldn't have come at a better time as the Yeomen desperately needed to leave Pennsylvania with three points in the conference standings and they did just that to move to 2-1-1 in league play. The game-winner was setup by fellow senior
Ben Kessler as he streaked down the far-right side and slotted a picture-perfect pass through the Gators' rearguard to the streaking Jandeleit for an easy finish.
The Yeomen controlled the run of play throughout the contest, evident by 24-13 advantage in shots and 9-4 margin in corner kicks. However, the Gators put 11 of their 13 tries on frame but senior keeper
Parker Whitcomb answered the challenge with a season-high 10 saves to run his 2021 account to 77 denials.
Despite the aggressiveness from Oberlin, it was the Gators who struck first in the 31
st minute as Cliff Weaver beat Whitcomb to the top right corner of the cage from 10 yards out with the help of a Nicholas Taliani feed.
The Yeomen continued to trail well into the second half until the 71
st minute when senior
Thomas Kanter found some room in the middle of the box and sent a shot into the lower left 90 of the goal for his first marker of the year. It was
Zach Moskowitz who made it happen as he dribbled his way through the Allegheny backline before putting Kanter in prime position to score.
After the Oberlin equalizer the Gators work rate increased significantly down the stretch, forcing Whitcomb to make four saves over the final 14 minutes of regulation to setup the heroic overtime finish.
The win moved Oberlin to 4-6-3 overall while Allegheny fell to 4-8-0 and is still in search of its first NCAC point sitting at 0-4-0 in league play.
The Yeomen will be back on the road on Saturday night when they take on the Terriers of Hiram College at 7:30 p.m.
