Granville, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's basketball team committed 15 turnovers that translated into 22 points for the Denison Big Red as they held off the Yeomen, 67-62, on Saturday afternoon.
Oberlin's senior backcourt duo of
Joshua Friedkin and
Christian Fioretti led the Yeomen attack with Friedkin posting a game-high 17 points to go along with five assists. Fioretti added 14 points, seven rebounds, and four helpers. Junior
Wolf Moser also chipped in 11 points in the setback.
The Big Red led 14-5 seven minutes into the game and later increased their margin out to 10, 22-12, with nine minutes left to play in the half. Oberlin methodically worked its way back into the contest as a jumper in the paint from
Andre Campbell had the deficit down to 26-22 at the 4:34 mark. The Denison lead would swell back out to eight but Moser would cap the first-half scoring with a jumper to make it a 32-26 Big Red advantage at the intermission.
Less than five minutes into the second half, the Yeomen found themselves down by 10 yet again but they would rip off a 14-2 run to claim a 49-47 edge with 8:21 left to play. The burst featured a pair of triple-hits by Friedkin and seven points from Fioretti.
The Big Red would reestablish control, grabbing a 59-53 lead with just under five minutes left to play. After Fioretti and Matt Gerics traded 3-pointers, a
Charles Tiedemann layup had the gap down to 62-60 with 1:44 left but Denison followed with a dagger 3-pointer by Jack Coulter.
In the final minute, a pair of clutch free throws by
Isaac Finestone made it a one-possession game and the Big Red would come up empty on their next trip down the floor – giving the Yeomen an opportunity to tie it. Unfortunately, it wasn't to be as Fioretti's long-range 3-pointer from the far wing went halfway down before spinning out to allow the Big Red to escape with the win and the season series sweep.
The loss dropped the Yeomen back to 12-9 overall and 6-9 in the NCAC. The Big Red moved to 8-13 and 5-9 in league action.
Oberlin will look to take down the Allegheny College Gators for the second time this season as they come to Philips Gym on Wednesday night for an 8 p.m. conference clash.
