Oberlin, Ohio – Oberlin's senior backcourt duo of
Christian Fioretti and
Joshua Friedkin combined to score 45 points to propel the Yeomen to a 74-64 victory over the Allegheny College Gators on Wednesday night at Philips Gym.
Fioretti, a native of Menlo Park, California, netted 25 points on an efficient 10-of-15 shooting to accompany his seven rebounds and four assists. Friedkin, who also dished out four helpers, hit the 20-point mark for the fifth time this season as the pair combined to go 9-of-14 from 3-point land.
Jordan Armstrong added 10 points off the bench in 15 minutes of action.
The game was tied at 16-16 with 8:26 left in the opening half and Oberlin later trailed 22-21 at the 4:27 mark. However, the Yeomen ripped off an 11-3 run that featured a pair of threes from Friedkin and another from Fioretti as they grabbed a 32-25 lead before ultimately carrying a 37-29 cushion into the intermission as Fioretti beat the buzzer with one of his five triple-hits in the game.
Less than five minutes into the second half the Yeomen lead swelled to 14, 53-39, but Allegheny wouldn't go away without chomping at the bit, shrinking the margin down to 57-52 with over nine minutes left to play. Oberlin would answer the call with a mini 7-0 spurt to create some significant breathing room.
However, in the final minutes the Gators trimmed the deficit down to seven, 69-62, but the Yeomen were able to work some clock following an offensive rebound by Fioretti, who eventually capped the extended possession with a jumper in the paint. He would then delivery a dagger 3-pointer on the next trip down to put the final touches on the victory.
The Yeomen triggered 18 more shots than the Gators, finishing 28-of-64 for a 43.8 percent clip. The extra attempts were largely due to Oberlin's rebounding effort as the Yeomen finished with a 36-27 advantage on the glass, including a 17-7 edge on the offensive end which resulted in a 17-2 difference in second-chance points. The Yeomen bench bunch also outscored its Allegheny counterparts, 21-4.
The Yeomen, who swept the season series, moved to 13-9 overall and 7-8 in the NCAC while the Gators dropped back to 11-11 and 5-10 in league play.
Oberlin will be back in action on Saturday afternoon at Hiram College. Tip-Time is set for 1 p.m.
