Delaware, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's basketball team earned a 67-60 road win over the Ohio Wesleyan University Battling Bishops on Wednesday night at Branch Rickey Arena to complete the season series sweep.
It is the first time the Yeomen have beat the Bishops twice in the same season since the 1943-44 campaign when Oberlin prevailed 42-41 on December 11 and would then follow with a 50-48 overtime triumph on January 22.
Tonight's effort was led by senior
Christian Fioretti as he stuffed the stat sheet with 23 points and seven assists while tying a career-high with 13 rebounds to notch his second double-double of the year. Classmate
Andre Campbell added 12 points on an efficient 6-of-9 shooting.
A
Wolf Moser 3-pointer gave the Yeomen an early 14-10 advantage at the 12:18 mark but the Bishops answered back with an 8-0 response run over the next four minutes. They would increase their lead out to seven on multiple occasions and eventually make it a nine-point advantage with 66 ticks left in the half but
Isaac Finestone would connect from distance in the closing seconds to trim the deficit down to 36-30 at the break.
The Yeomen started the second half with a 9-2 spurt that featured five points from Fioretti, including a deep triple-hit from the near wing to put Oberlin out in front 39-38. A baseline jumper from Campbell at the midway point of the second session extended the Yeomen advantage to 53-47.
However, OWU wasn't going away without a fight as the Bishops stormed back with an 11-0 surge to take a 58-53 lead with just over six minutes left to play. The Yeomen would answer the call by holding the Bishops scoreless until the final seconds as Oberlin closed the game on a 14-2 barrage. A fastbreak layup by Campbell with 1:56 left put the Yeomen on top 59-58 and the gap would only widen from there down the stretch.
After shooting a blistering 64 percent (14-of-22) in the first half, the Bishops cooled off in the second session as the Yeomen's defensive adjustments resulted in them connecting on just 9-of-28 shots in the second half for 32.1 percent success rate. Oberlin, which won the battle of the boards 35-27, shot 44.6 percent (25-of-56) in the victory.
The Yeomen moved to 12-8 with the win and are now 6-7 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. OWU dropped to 11-9 and have the same league mark as Oberlin at 6-7.
The Yeomen conclude their three-game road trip on Saturday afternoon at Denison University. Tip-time is set for 3 p.m.
