Hiram, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's basketball team broke the game open in the second half en route to earning an 84-69 road win at Hiram College on Saturday afternoon.
Senior
Christian Fioretti spearheaded the Yeomen effort with 26 points on 11-of-15 shooting while classmate
Joshua Friedkin added 17 points. Fellow senior
Charles Tiedemann matched a career-best with 14 points as he hit on seven of his eight shots while finishing one rebound shy of a double-double with nine boards.
It was nip-and-tuck throughout the opening half as no more than four points would separate the two foes in the session. The opening 20 minutes featured 11 lead changes and 11 ties along the way. A jumper in the paint by Tiedemann with six seconds left gave the Yeomen a four-point lead but Sherman Dean III would beat the first-half horn to make it a 35-34 Oberlin advantage at the break.
It remained tight throughout the first part of the second half as
Jordan Armstrong's finish from in tight made it a 54-48 Yeomen lead with just over 11 minutes left to play. Oberlin continued to widen the margin from there as Finestone's jumper in the paint increased the difference out to 13, 63-50, at the 9:20 mark.
The Terriers cut the deficit down to nine, 70-61, with just over five minutes to go but the Yeomen would quickly shutdown any threat of a comeback, pushing the lead back out to double digits and never relenting the rest of the way.
Oberlin shot 57 percent, hitting on 33 of the 58 shots they hoisted while also going an impressive 15-of-18 (83.3%) at the free-throw line. The Yeomen, who outscored the Terriers 46-26 in the paint, held Hiram to a 41.4 percent success rate as they hit on 24-of-58 shots.
The Yeomen moved to 14-9 overall and evened their conference mark at 8-8. Hiram fell to 7-16 and 4-12 in league action.
