Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's basketball team earned a commanding 95-77 victory over the Hiram College Terriers on Saturday afternoon at Philips Gym.
The Yeomen offense was clicking all afternoon long as they dished out a season-high 27 assists on 36 made baskets. The torrid play of
Isaac Finestone continued as he reset his career-high for the second straight game, finishing with 22 points and a career-best 11 rebounds for his first-career double-double. Senior
Christian Fioretti netted 17 points to accompany his seven rebounds while matching backcourt mate
Joshua Friedkin with eight assists. Classmate
Andre Campbell chipped in 13 points in the win.
The Oberlin bench bunch outscored its Hiram counterparts 28-7, due in large part to
Wolf Moser and
Dorde Otasevic as the duo each added 12 points. Otasevic made his first appearance since December 10 due to injury and made 5-of-7 shots in less than 10 minutes of action.
The Yeomen jumped out to a quick 10-3 lead but a Sherman Dean III 3-pointer would later tie the game at 13-13 with 13:17 left to play in the opening half. A 14-4 Yeomen response run gave the home side a 27-17 advantage, but the Terriers kept biting at the lead, shrinking the cushion down to 29-27 at the 7:38 mark.
The first-half runs would continue as Oberlin scored the next nine points of the session and ultimately built the lead out to 14, 47-33, with under three minutes to go. However, the Terriers closed the half strong as the Yeomen settled for a 49-43 differential at the intermission.
After shooting a blistering 62.5 percent (20-of-32) in the first half, Oberlin did cool off a little in the second half but were still able to keep Hiram at bay.
The Yeomen ballooned the lead to 76-58 with 9:12 left to expire but the Terriers didn't go away quietly as they put together a 12-2 burst to make it 78-70 with over five minutes left to play. However, the Yeomen would buckle down on both ends of the floor and eventually swell the margin out to 20, 93-73, on back-to-back corner threes from Finestone to put the final dagger into the Terriers.
The Yeomen shot 52.9 percent (36-of-68) from the floor, which included a 13-of-29 (44.8%) performance from long range. The Terriers, who were led by Brodgie Gordon's 24 points, finished just 38.8 percent with 26 makes on 67 shots.
The win ran the Yeomen's record to 9-6 overall and 3-5 in the NCAC. Hiram dropped back to 5-10 and 2-6 in league play.
Oberlin, which is 5-2 away from Philips Gym this season, will have another tough road battle at Allegheny College on Wednesday night at 8 p.m.
