Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College field hockey team dropped a 4-1 decision to the visiting Earlham College Quakers on Saturday afternoon at Bailey Field.
The Quakers posted three first-quarter goals to establish early control of the match. Just under five minutes into the contest Guin Schalck found space on the left post and flicked in her first of two goals in the period. Schalck would later finish off a cross from Sofia Salvatore – who would cap the early scoring by dribbling through the Yeowomen defense before sending in a shot from the left side.
With 6:40 left in the second quarter, senior
Libby Royer triggered a shot from the near left corner but it was turned away by Meg Murphy to keep the Yeowomen scoreless in the first 30 minutes of play.
After the first quarter, the Yeowomen defense buckled down and kept the Quakers off the board until just six minutes remained in the match.
The Yeowomen would score the lone third-quarter goal as Royer followed her own shot and put the rebound back in for her fourth goal of the season and third in the last two games. For the Columbus, Ohio, native it was also her 11
th career tally.
Oberlin continued to fight to the end but could not find another goal in the match. However, the Quakers would tack on one more for insurance in the 54
th minute as Denise Bergdolt redirected a pass from Olivia Layne to cap the game's scoring.
Rookie netminder went the distance in the cage, making nine saves to run her season account to 41.
Earlham finished with a 19-4 advantage in shots, including a 13-3 margin in shots on goal. The Quakers also triggered nine penalty corners compared to Oberlin's two.
The loss dropped Oberlin back to 3-5 on the year while Earlham moved above the .500 mark at 5-4.
The Yeowomen will conclude their three-game homestand on next Saturday as they host Concordia University (WI) at 11 a.m. to kickoff
