New Wilmington, PA – The Oberlin College men's soccer team finished off its non-conference slate on the wrong end of a 3-2 decision at Westminster College on Wednesday night.
The Yeomen controlled the run of play throughout the 90-minute tussle, finishing with a 25-15 advantage in shots, which included a 14-8 margin in shots on frame. However, the Yeomen have to tip their caps to Titans' keeper Ezra Cimino as he came away with 12 saves on the night to put his side in line for the win.
Westminster found two tallies in the first 45-minute stanza, leaving the Yeomen playing catch-up in the second half.
Less than 10 minutes after the restart, the Yeomen would get on the board courtesy of
Ben Kessler's third goal of the year. He was setup on the play by freshman
Eddie Aguayo as he earned his first-collegiate point with the assist.
The Yeomen continued to pressure the Titans' rearguard and fire away at Cimino, but he withstood every charge.
The Titans would get an all-important insurance goal from Ivan Mojica in the 82
nd minute to extend their cushion to 3-1.
Less than a minute later
Michael Candelori had a shot turned away by Cimino and shortly thereafter
Thomas Kanter had a header go wide, while
Jack McMillin also had a shot that was off the mark.
However, the Yeomen would eventually get back to within one as
Charlie Stube finished off a Kessler pass for his first-career goal. Unfortunately, just 39 seconds remained in the game and the Yeomen ran out of time to complete the comeback.
Max Buri went all 90 minutes between the pipes for the Yeomen, making five saves to run his season count to 21.
The loss dropped the Yeomen back to 3-6 on the year, while the Titans moved to 5-4.
Oberlin opens North Coast Athletic Conference play on Saturday at DePauw University. The first touch is set for 5 p.m.
