Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's soccer team scored twice in the final six minutes to earn a thrilling, 2-1, come-from-behind victory over the visiting Baldwin Wallace University Jackets on Wednesday night at Fred Shults Field.
After a plethora of scoring chances that never came to fruition, the Yeomen found the equalizer a mere two seconds into the 85
th minute.
Nic Jandeleit took a long pass from
Ryan Kim and beat his marker to the spot on the near right side of the box before lacing in a strike to the lower left 90 for his team-leading fifth tally of the year.
After taking the lid of the goal cage, the Yeomen wasted no time finding the game-winner as just 1:15 later a beautifully executed counter-attack had Jandeleit on the giving end of a
Thomas Kanter's second score of the season.
The Yeomen rearguard stood tall throughout the affair, bracketing BW leading scorer Danny Ruple all evening long. The Yellow Jackets all-time leader in goals would eventually get loose to deposit his 10
th goal of the season in the 70th minute to put the Yellow Jackets out in front.
After a scoreless first half for both sides, the pace of play picked up as the Yeomen continued to create a magnitude of dangerous scoring chances.
In the 52
nd minute, Kanter nearly gave the Yeomen the lead but BW keeper Patrick Mehal was able to get just enough of his shot to punch it over the crossbar. Moments later a leak out had Oberlin in a 3-on-1 run but
Jack McMillin's shot attempt was flicked wide of the left post.
Oberlin had a few more close calls down the stretch, including what would have been a potential insurance goal. Kanter rifled a shot off Mehal that ended up at the feet of McMillin on the near post but Mehal made an acrobatic diving save on the put-back attempt to keep it a one-goal game with just under three minutes to play.
The Yeomen finished with a 19-11 advantage in shots, including an 11-4 margin in shots on goal. BW did have a slight 7-6 edge in corner kicks.
Oberlin's
Max Buri made three saves in the win, while Mehal made six of his nine stops in the second half.
The Yeomen will conclude their five-match homestand on Saturday afternoon as they welcome Heidelberg University to town for a 4 p.m. matinee.
