Wooster, Ohio - The Oberlin College volleyball team went 1-1 at the Wooster Kilt Classic on Saturday, dropping match one of the day to Bluffton before bouncing back with a four-set win over Colby College in the nightcap.
Through 10 games, the Yeowomen are now 5-5 on the season as the win over Colby stopped a mini three-match skid.
Colby Recap
It was a tight battle throughout between the Yeowomen and Mules but in the ends it was Oberlin who prevailed 25-21, 23-25, 25-22, 25-19.
Oberlin used a balance attack as
Maura Gibbs (14),
Emery Beacom (11), and
Natasha Radic (11) each finished with double-digit kills. Gibbs also added 14 digs and a pair of aces in the win.
The opening set was knotted at 21 but back-to-back send-downs by Gibbs were followed with two errors by the Mules to give Oberlin the win.
In the second-set loss, Oberlin fell behind 6-1 in the early going but rallied all the way back to level the game at 23 points each. However, back-to-back Yeowomen attacking errors allowed Colby to square the match.
Oberlin led by 11, 17-6, midway through the third set and fended off a late Colby charge.
The Yeowomen trailed 18-17 in the fourth game but held the Mules to just one point the reset of the way, closing the match with an 8-1 burst that featured a pair of aces from Gibbs and match-clinching block by
Kira Widran.
Samantha Lam had the offense in system with 26 assists, while
Lindsey Felton added 13 helpers of her own.
Lauren Fitts guided the backline unit with 25 digs.
Bluffton Recap
The Yeowomen were unable to find much traction against the Beavers, dropping the four-set affair by the scores of 16-25, 22-25, 25-22, 19-25.
Oberlin hit just .118 for the match with 40 kills against 25 errors. Radic led the Yeowomen effort with 11 kills to go along with 10 digs and two aces, while Beacom added nine finishes on 20 swings. Gibbs also chipped in eight kills and a team-high 13 digs in the setback.
Lam dished out 22 assists to accompany her seven digs, while Felton also contributed 13 helpers.
After a lackluster opening set, Oberlin had a chance to win the second set as they were tied a 20 before the Beavers created some separation with a 3-0 spurt. The Yeowomen would get within two at 24-22 but could not fend off game-point.
In the third-set victory, the Yeowomen and Beavers were even at 16 but a 7-1 Oberlin burst ballooned the lead to 23-17. Bluffton later found themselves back within two at 24-22 but the clincher would ultimately come from a Radic kill to extend the match.
Unfortunately, the Yeowomen couldn't sustain the momentum as Bluffton cruised through the fourth game with relative ease to finish off the victory.
Oberlin is back in action next Saturday with matches against La Roche and Franciscan.
