Wooster, Ohio – For the second week in a row, the Oberlin College football team failed to score as they fell to the College of Wooster Fighting Scots, 17-0, at John P. Papp Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
In his first-career start, freshman quarterback
Chris Allen Jr. finished 17-of-35 for 165 yards passing with no interceptions. Tight end
Brandon Davies led the way with 58 yards on seven catches, while
Brian Colarusso snagged five balls for 57 yards.
Kobe Brooks led the ground gainers with 66 yards on 21 rushes.
Devin White paced the defensive effort with 10 tackles while
Malachi Clemons added nine stops and two pass break-ups.
The Yeomen's offensive struggles continued throughout the first half as the opening 30 minutes featured four punts, two turnovers on downs, and one fumble.
Oberlin's best chance to score came late in the first quarter as senior
Justin Godfrey stripped Scots' running back Chase Flannigan of the football and
Zac Ntia scooped it up and rumbled his way down to the Wooster 22-yard line. However, the Yeomen offense could not capitalize as they gained just three yards on four plays before giving the ball back to the Scots.
Rookie
Liam Akpata would short-circuit the ensuing Wooster drive with his first-career interception in the end zone but the Scots would eventually breakthrough with 6:18 left to play in the half when Lake Barrett capped a 9-play, 47-yard drive with 22-yard field goal.
Oberlin would take over on offense with 97 seconds left in the half but instead of pushing forward for potential points, disaster happened as Allen Jr. was strip-sacked and the Scots took advantage of the short field position. Just four plays later Troy Baughman capped off a 31-yard drive with 12 seconds to go on a 3-yard TD run up the middle to make it a 10-0 Wooster lead at the half.
The only points in the second half came on Bryce Gresham's 55-yard catch-and-run TD with 3:08 left in the third quarter.
Wooster finished with 20 first downs compared to the Yeomen's 10. The Scots also out-gained the Yeomen 363-212 and held Oberlin to a combined 5-of-22 on third and fourth down.
For the second week in a row, the Yeomen defense made 11 tackles-for-loss. In addition to their two takeaways, Oberlin also stopped the Scots on downs three times. Through two games, Oberlin has surrendered just 20 points, while creating six takeaways and six sacks.
The result marked the first set of back-to-back offensive shutouts for Oberlin since 2000 when they lost to Kenyon (12-0) and Wooster (34-0) in consecutive weeks.
The Yeomen will look to get on track next week at Ohio Wesleyan University. The opening kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
