Delaware, Ohio – The Oberlin College football team suffered a 55-3 setback at Ohio Wesleyan University on Saturday afternoon.
The Bishops scored early and often and the Yeomen struggled to find a response throughout, hindering their own cause by committing four turnovers along the way.
Oberlin failed to find any traction on the ground until late in the game as the Bishops held them to 107 rushing yards. Rookie
Ryan McCrum was a bright spot on the ground as he totaled 66 yards on 14 carries. Freshman quarterback
Chris Allen Jr. made his second consecutive start, finishing 15-of-27 passing for 158 yards before coming out of the game in the third quarter. Classmates Christian Jackson and
Matthew Schuster also made their first-career appearances under center.
Tim Martin was Allen's top target as he finished with 62 yards on seven catches.
OWU wasted no time getting on the board, needing just 1:08 to score the game's first touchdown. However, the Yeomen defense would settle in from there and hold them scoreless the rest of the quarter.
Oberlin's first points of the season would ultimately come early in the second quarter as the Yeomen capped off a 17-play, 72-yard march that took 9:06 off the clock with a 19-yard field goal by
Christian Arnold.
On the ensuing possession, Oberlin's defense would hold OWU to just a field goal to make it 10-3, but the Yeomen would fumble on three consecutive drives, setting up the Bishops for what turned into a 27-point second quarter and a 34-3 halftime lead.
The Yeomen never threatened in the second half as OWU continued to pour it on with 21 points in the third quarter before calling off the dogs in the fourth.
Jabree Hason led the Yeomen with 10 tackles in the loss. Overall, the Yeomen defense made six tackles-for-loss, which included sacks by
Devin White,
Alex Etgen, and
Jack Lesniak.
The Yeomen are idle next week and will return to action on Homecoming Saturday when they host the Kenyon College Lords on October 5 at 3 p.m.
