Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's soccer team could not fend off a strong second-half surge from the visiting Marietta College Pioneers as they came into Fred Shults Field and left town with a 4-1 victory over the Yeomen on a rainy Sunday afternoon.
The loss dropped the Yeomen back to 0-2 on the year while Marietta heads back to Southern Ohio at 1-1.
Both teams took advantage of setpiece opportunities in the opening half to get on the board. The Pioneers struck first early in the 14
th minute as Dave Beattie found room inside the box after taking a feed from Cole Pappas.
It didn't take the Yeomen long to respond as a foul just outside the 18-yard area on the near left side setup a free kick opportunity for
Spencer Wright who found a streaking
Jack McMillin on the back post. The local Oberlin native did the rest from there as he redirected the ball into the net for his first goal of the season and 15
th of his career.
As the half wore on, both sides had their chances to go out in front but a lengthy weather delay for lightning with 10:03 left to play in the opening stanza halted the action.
Following the restart, The Pioneers would take the lead for good just before the halftime intermission as the Yeomen rearguard surrendered another setpiece goal that came courtesy of Marietta's Gabe Haines.
The Yeomen could not find much traction in the second half as the Pioneers broke the game open with goals in the 52
nd and 55
th minutes to leave no doubt in the eventual outcome.
Marietta outshot the Yeomen 19-11 but had just an 8-6 edge in shots on goal. In a physical affair that featured three yellow cards for each side, Marietta also triggered six corners compared Oberlin's two.
Parker Whitcomb made four saves in the setback.
Oberlin is back in action on Wednesday night on the road at Otterbein University. The first touch is set for 7 p.m.
